The Types Of Orthosis Braces and Its Uses

There are many different types of leg braces today designed specifically to cater to the needs of the physically disabled. You may have suffered an injury or you may be suffering from a condition that makes it difficult for you to walk or move. Orthosis braces are a type of these braces and may further be divided into different categories. Some of them are listed below as well as their uses.

Types of Orthosis Braces

  • Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis Brace: These braces are also known as TLSO. They are usually worn after a surgical operation of the spinal cord. Pe-Lite foam is the material used most often in designing these orthosis braces. The material is usually used along with polypropylene strips. This brace is a body jacket that may be used either for accumulation of the spinal cord after the surgery or for spinal correction. The designing and the firmness of the brace depends on the deformity. It may be rigid, semi-rigid or even soft.
  • Lumbosacral orthosis brace: These braces give the user the flexibility to adjust them according to their convenience. The degree of tension can be altered according to the comfort level. These orthosis braces have been designed specifically for the lower back. They decrease the level of pressure on the region called lumbar sacral. This is brought about by elevating the pressure in the intra-abdominal region. This pressure also works as a reminder to sit in the correct posture. These braces are used very often in order to ease lower back pain.
  • Ankle AFOs: These come under the category of leg braces. They are termed solid, dynamic and molded. The solid AFO are named so because of the amount of plastic used in their designing. The level of plastic used varies the support provided. The brace limits movement so that there is no pressure on the ankle and the support comes from the knee. Among all the types of orthosis braces for the leg, these are the most supportive. The dynamic AFO may also be called articulated because it lets the knee move a little more than the other braces. Alongside, it also provides the required support. Molded AFO is a brace that is made according to the leg size of the patient to fit properly. This may also be termed as a custom AFO.

There are many different orthosis braces to be chosen based on the condition or the deformity. More often than not, a prescription is a must for these braces. The doctor is the only one who can decide what the best brace is for your condition and thus his advice must be followed.
